How to cook with crab meat

Do you want to learn how to cook with crab meat? Would you like a few cooking ideas to get the most out of this tasty meat? If you find yourself in the highly spoiled predicament of having some shelled crab meat you have come to the right place.

We will show you a variety of ways to get you cooking with crab meat and suggest some yummy recipes for dinner tonight.

Most people will crack a crab at light speed, and their hands will make a bee line straight for their mouths, stopping only to dip the crab in butter. If you live in crab country then you would know this as perfectly normal behavior. (I’ve applied for citizenship in crab county. Any day now…)

However, sometimes it’s nice to make a meal out of crab meat and add some extra nutritional benefits along the way.

Here, we’re talking straight crab meat. No shells or cartilage attached. If you have whole crabs you will need to clean and crack them first before using this page. Visit our how to clean a crab page for help.

Crab Cakes

Crab cakes are America’s most popular method of cooking with crab meat. They are especially easy to make and easy to modify. If you dislike a particular ingredient in the recipe, simply omit it!

The most popular method of cooking the cakes is to fry them with bread crumbs. You can also turn them into a healthy meal by baking or grilling. They really are that diverse.

Crab cakes naturally pair well with any side dish. They are eaten for breakfast –as eggs benedict, for lunch, dinner or as a snack.

Another great benefit to crab cakes is they are easy to store in the refrigerator or freezer for later.

Check out these recipes (we have only included our favorites) on our crab cakes page here.

Crab Soup / Crab Bisque / Crab Chowder

There is nothing in the world that will warm your belly like a delicious bowl of crab soup. This is a must have for those soggy, dreary days when you have been out on the chilly water crab fishing all day.

I have never made a crab soup that I didn’t like. It’s a great start to any dinner or as the main event.

This soup can also be kept for months in your freezer, and then thawed out in the crabbing off-season.

Crab Dip

One of the simplest ways to use your extra crab meat is to put the crab into a cheesy crab dip. Crab and cheese go together like Scooby and Shaggy.

You can serve the dip warm, hot or cold either way tastes great.

Breads, crackers, chips, veggies or anything else you might have on hand make a good accompaniment to crab dip.

Check out our crab dip page for recipe ideas.
